英作文のリファクタリング本

悪文を正すための原則がまとめられた本です。名著ですが、翻訳本は永久に出ないでしょう。なぜなら、本文そのものが英文の例になっている箇所があるからです。

Joseph M. Williams著、Style: Toward Clarity and Grace

この本は10章からなり、文単位のミクロな原則から、段落、文章全体へと対象が広がって行きます。中味が濃いので4章くらいまでで1200円という元は取れたと思っています。

雰囲気を知ってもらうために第１章の最初の段落を拾ってみます。

This is a book about writing clearly. I wish it could be short and simple like some others more widely known, but I want to do more than just urge writers to "Omit Needless Words" or "Be clear." Telling me to "Be clear" is like telling me to "Hit the ball squarely." I know that. What I don't know is how to do it. To explain how to write clearly, I have to go beyond platitudes*1.

この本の内容はかなりおもしろいので日記のネタがないときに少しづつ紹介します。
